As an investigative journalist I uncovered the systematic dumping of toxic trade waste and heavy metals by industry in waterways around Sydney, Australia. For this I won best news story. The poisoning of the environment with toxic trade waste combined with the suffocating greenhouse gases we create has forced wildlife to the very brink. It is not about if but when so now is the time to preserve the present for the future. It is time to act by building a biological bank to store the DNA of threatened wildlife species so they are not lost forever, and can be brought back to life when the scientific knowhow becomes available as it surely will in the not too distant future. We cannot rely on this action as a solution but more as a contingency strategy, and every good plan has a back-up.Jens Ward
